A disembodied spirit hesitates to commit to earthly life. These and other extraordinary protagonists haunt the pages of Jan M. Flynn's speculative fiction. A blend of horror, humor and heart, the award-winning stories in this collection take readers on a journey into a world illumined by the paranormal. Suitable for ages young adult through cadaver.

Corpse Pose And Other Tales eBook Jan M Flynn

Author Jan Flynn hits the high notes with each of the ten tales in this imaginative and entertaining collection of speculative fiction. I love how the author tells a fantastic story as though it were as commonplace as going to the post office. And in the midst of a wild tale, the reader can believe in the well-drawn characters and feel a range of emotions—laughter foremost.

Each story is tight, genuine, over the top—and delightful to read. I found the writing style clean, well seasoned with modernisms, snarky asides and keen observations. The authorial voice shines through the collection, yet each story sounds unique, beginning with Corpse Pose, a darkly humorous yoga fantasy through Walk-in, and an uplifting look at what we do between human incarnations. The tales range from the hilarious, Imp, to Pills, packed with heart touching magical realism, to the psychological horror of 541. While the collection is touted as horror “illumined by the paranormal,” for me, the “humor and heart” elevate these stories from your run-of-the-mill slasher or vampire tales. If you love dark humor, creepy twists, magical realism and pathos, Corpse Pose: and Other Tales will be your go-to fix. I’ve read it twice. One caution, reading these stories might lead to spontaneous laughter and flights of fancy!

Corpse Pose And Other Tales eBook Jan M Flynn Reviews

Loved “Corpse Pose And Other Tales.” I read the whole collection all in one gulp, couldn't stop myself. The stories are perfect bites, each one delicious and satisfying in its own way, gripping and horrifying, unexpectedly funny. I like that “Corpse Pose” and some of the other stories poke fun at pedantic protocols. The specific genre of this story collection is hard to nail down. I would call it Dark Fantasy, but a refreshing element of humor runs strong and modifies the Dark in Dark Fantasy; still the horror ingredient is there to spice and shock. All in all a yummy read, beginning to end.
Jan Flynn's collection of immensely entertaining tales from the crypt of her endlessly inventive mind is a treat from beginning to end. Every story has a unique flavor and surprising twist, full of witty wordplay, juicy turns of phrase and quirky characters. I particularly loved the title story Corpse Pose set in the Institute for the Divergently Sentient (IDS) where Victoria "a vampire with a soul" who hasn't "touched a drop on non- donated blood in twenty years" instructs a collection of LVSs (and occasionally alarmingly) Zs and As in the art of yoga. Translated that is Lycanthropes,Vampires and Shape Shifters. If you want to know what a Z and an A is, read the book! Suffice to say that all of these delightfully undead characters and particularly Victoria herself are worthy of a T.V series.
The Corpse Pose and Other Tales is a treasure trove of thoughtfully entertaining parables that keep you thinking long after you’ve finished reading. Jan Flynn’s dynamic storytelling and sly sense of irony effectively address the concerns and anxieties of our times in each Gothic gem of a story. The everyday fears of childhood (loss of security, social failure, suspicion of authority) shape the psychic landscape of the stories. In “Pills,” routine peer pressure brings horrific results; in the deliciously evil “Sub,” students learn a hard lesson in respecting their elders and in “Stuffy,” a teen’s only defense against a real-life menace is to descend into supernatural vengeance. Each story is terrific—whether binge-read or slowly savored –they are first-class, thought-provoking entertainment.
I loved this incredibly clever, sharply written, entirely creepy collection of short stories! They draw on our own deep fears of things-that-go-bump-in-the-night, the undead or not-quite dead, or spooky situations that unravel into a plot-ending surprise. There is something vaguely familiar in some of the stories, as if way back in the deep recesses of my mind I’ve considered some of the scenarios author Flynn teases open … and yet each one is fresh and thought provoking. The writing is excellent, intelligent enough for adults yet hip enough and with modern-day story lines/vocabulary appealing to teenagers. The other thing I loved is that each story is different from the others, as too often collections of short stories don’t have enough variety and this one definitely did! If Flynn knocked on my door and wanted to spend the night, I’d love the opportunity to ask her where her ideas come from … yet would likely sleep with one eye open.
This is a great collection of very imaginative and thoughtful, sometimes thought-provoking stories. There is something for everyone here, but I think most readers will love them all.
You always have to suspect that a story collection will be like a greatest hits album, containing a few gems and the rest crap. But not Corpse Pose and Other Tales. All the stories are strong and well-written.
Since I bought the book, I've gone back and read a few of the stories over again, and they are even better the second time around. I've found subtleties I missed on the first read.
This ones a keeper. I look forward to more books by this promising new author.
Jan Flynn's "Corpse Pose" is a worthy beginning. The stories harken back to the best writings of Rod Serling and evoke the best of the old TV series "Thriller", "One Step Beyond", and "Twilight Zone". Always fresh and never predictable, these stories cry out for scripting; indeed there's a full season here of BBC standards and length. Some of the characters are instant icons for further plummeting, and some with make you smile at the author's cleverness and ingenuity. The only lamentable quality of the works is that there aren't more pages to turn...yet. Excellent read!
