Eric Norris takes the reader on a transcendental journey through the developing mind of a writer. Part poetry, part prose, comic, tragic, irreverent, and profound, Cock Sucking (On Mars) will surprise you, as only life on another world can.

I don’t read very much literature (I mostly read history) but I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this book. I was expecting something totally different based on the outrageous title—something kind of campy. Then I looked inside. It was like looking inside a person at different stages in his life, as he grows and changes. You see it all happening. As you you turn each page. This is a serious book. Serious and funny. I guess my favorite piece was the love poem at the center of everything, “Takaaki”. Maybe because it deals with history and how the past lives with us. I am not sure. All I know is that the poem “Takaaki” blew me away. It doesn’t even sound like a poem when you read it aloud, either. It sounds normal, like one person speaking to another. (The whole book sounds like that, really.) And the story, well…I don’t want to give too much away, since the story of “Takaaki” is a bit of a mystery, but I will quote this:

Becoming human takes a bit of time.
Nobody knows exactly how we do it.
We classify the clock as the enzyme—
the universal catalyst. Through it,
we cease to be that seemingly divine
lump of life we call ‘a child.’ Fine.
We can cope with children pretty well.
What gives geneticists heartburn from Hell,
however, are the differing results
we get. When something evil, as a rule,
shows up with a small army at the pool,
shooting all the judges, most adults
completely fall to pieces. Like that helps.
Now, evil can compete with Michael Phelps.

The cruel careers of our worst instincts are
Olympic in brutality, but short—
if measured by the life of stone or star.
Were we less human, we might not resort
to good or evil. They’d be words—like stones
and stars. The sea would not be free of bones,
but bones would be more beautiful, like sand
twinkling between alien toes stand-
ing on Coney Island, where the old Cyclone—
the roller coaster—clatters up and down.
The salty waves would still drift in, surround
small feet. Bad children would be taken home.
The sea would sparkle—conscience cold and clear.
Only you and I would disappear…

If there was ever a book you should not judge by its cover, it is this one. I am glad that I bought it. I think it will appeal to gay and straight audiences alike.
